SUBJECT: Challenge to Educational Citizenship Award Program
Please share the following message from our State Student Advisory Council:
The State Student Advisory Council on Education is pleased to offer the
Challenge to Educational Citizenship Award Program.
The recipients of these awards embody the spirit of citizenship, commitment to serving
others, and altruism. Any student-organized activity that demonstrates intrinsic
kindness is eligible for submission. Submitted projects will be evaluated on the basis of
the depth, breadth, and quality of impact on others.
Reflect on the organizations within your school community. Do any of them epitomize
exemplary civic awareness, cooperation, and boundless potential for community
impact? If so, SSACE asks you to give them your thoughtful consideration for this
recognition.
Schools may submit more than one project. Please complete a separate form (master
copy attached) for each project. Every project submitted will receive a certificate of
recognition. The members of SSACE will carefully evaluate and select between 10 and
20 statewide winners. All submissions will be published in a pamphlet and distributed
statewide to allow for replication of successful projects.
Awards will be presented in late May or early June. We hope this year every middle and
high school in Connecticut will submit at least one project in order to properly recognize
the hard work of students who work tirelessly to improve their communities. Thank you.

Project Title: Bacon Academy NHS Gives Back

Bacon Academy’s chapter of the National Honor Society creates enthusiasm for scholarship,
promotes leadership, develops character, and most importantly kindles a desire to serve our
community. This past school year, our chapter of 25 students has collectively completed a total
of 271.5 hours of service and supported 1,000 individuals throughout Colchester. Projects we
have pursued include: a tutoring program for students district-wide, organizing trash-cleanups
along Norwich Ave, advocating for a local small business, supporting a local nursing home by
organizing a holiday gift drive (200 gifts, wrapped and delivered). Additionally, we are currently
completing a courtyard cleanup project.
