BYLAWS OF THE BOARD
FILLING VACANCIES ON THE BOARD
DRAFT February 2022 - Second Reading 2/16/2022 - PC
Replaces Existing Policy (CABE model policy)
1. If a vacancy occurs on the Colchester Board of Education (the “Board”), the remaining members
of the Board shall fill such vacancy at a meeting or a special meeting convened for that purpose.
Pursuant to Town Charter requirements, the vacancy must be filled by a Colchester resident who
is a member of the same party of the exiting member.
2. A member resigning from the Board should present, or have presented, a written letter of
resignation to the Board Chair or at a regular meeting of the Board. Having accepted a letter of
resignation, or having become aware of a vacancy created by means other than the resignation
of a Board member, the Board will schedule the election of a replacement at the next regular
Board meeting or at a special meeting convened for such purpose.
3. The Superintendent will advertise the vacancy and application process in the local newspaper.
All applications will be submitted to the office of the First Selectman.
4. Said election, made by the majority of the Board and recorded in the minutes of that meeting,
shall be in effect until the next regular Town election, at which a successor shall be elected for
the unexpired portion of the term. The official ballot shall specify the vacancy to be filled. [This
is official language from CT-GS 10-219]
