Dear Mr. Jeffrey Burt,
Please accept this letter of resignation from the position of Athletic Director at Bacon
Academy effective June 21st 2022. I plan to return to Bacon Academy as a full time Physical
Education/Health Teacher for the 2022-2023 school year.
It has been my pleasure to serve as the Athletic Director at Bacon Academy for the past
16 years. As you know, the duties of the Athletic Director has grown tremendously since I first
started in the position. Most districts in the state of Connecticut consider the position of Athletic
Director to be an Administrative position within their school system and pay them as
Administrators. Colchester/Bacon Academy does not.
The Athletic Director position requires an enormous amount of time, commitment,
organization and dedication inside and outside of the school day. The AD is on call everyday,
every weekend, vacation days and vacation weeks during the school year in some capacity until
8pm or later. This does not include summer hours of work to prepare for the upcoming seasons.
Whether it is calls, emails, sporting events, checking fields, supervising games, changing
games, arranging bus times, notifying officials, coaches, players, administration, other AD’s and
schools or playing weatherman, hiring coaches, collecting paperwork etc. This is just a small
portion of the list of duties that the Athletic Director does on a daily basis.
The small stipend of $9,051 is not nearly close to the compensation that is deserved for
the position. The position of Athletic Director rivals any assistant principal position within the
district as far as the amount of work, time, effort and duties involved. Two local school systems
much smaller than Colchester pay their Athletic Director 118,000 (Griswold) and 123,000
(Montville) for an 11 month position.
