REPORT TO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION: CURRICULUM UPDATE
DATE: NOVEMBER 22, 2022
CURRICULUM PHASE: DEVELOPMENT
The following curricula are currently being developed by Colchester Public Schools (CPS) staff.
The anticipated presentation dates to the BOE and anticipated funding sources of each
curriculum are as follows:
e PreSchool: Anticipated December presentation to BOE. Funding from ESSER3/ARPA
Grant.
e Music Curriculum: Anticipated April presentation to BOE. Funding from Curriculum
Implementation line in the 22/23 budget.
e Writing Curriculum: Anticipated May presentation to BOE. Funds supporting this
curriculum will be budgeted for in the 23/24 Curriculum Implementation budget.
CURRICULUM PHASE: IMPLEMENTATION
e Math
o CES has implemented iReady, an assessment tool that provides faculty with the
necessary information to individualize instruction for students.
o JJIS teachers are receiving professional development from Exemplars
mathematics in the design and implementation of rigorous math tasks. The
funding source is the Title | grant.
o W4JJMS is developing rigorous mathematical tasks and continues to prepare
grade 8 students for the transition to Math 1 at Bacon Academy.
o BA teachers are working with professional development partners WestEd to
develop units and assessments for the new Math 1 course. The funding source is
the Title | grant.
e English Language Arts
o CT General Statute Section 10-14ii requires the Center for Literacy Research
and Reading Success at the CT Department of Education, in consultation with
the Reading Leadership Implementation Council, to review and approve at least
five reading curricula/programs for public-school districts to implement in the
2023-24 school year. CPS implemented one of the approved programs,
Wonders 2020, in the fall of 2021 in grades K-2. CPS plans to implement
Wonders 2020 in grade 3 in the fall of 2023. Funds for this curriculum will
be included in the ESSER2 and ARPA grant.
CURRICULUM PHASE: MONITOR AND ADJUST
e Science:
o Curriculum teams are meeting by building to review instructional units and
develop benchmark assessments.
o Elementary faculty will receive training in the use of StemScopes, the K-9 online
instructional resource for science.
oe Bacon Academy science teachers are entering their second year of instructional
coaching provided by the CT Science Center. The funding source is the Title 11
grant.
e@ Career Technical Education, Visual Literacy, and World Language curriculum teams will
meet in the late winter to review the impact of their curriculum on student learning
outcomes.
CURRICULUM PHASE: REVIEW
e itis anticipated that the review and development of the School Counseling curriculum
will begin in the spring of 2023.
e@ The review and development of the Social Studies curriculum will begin in the summer of
2023. CPS will include in the social studies curriculum the statutory requirements
outlined in Public Act No. 21-2, requiring the inclusion of Native American studies, as
well as the requirements outlined in Public Act No. 22-80, requiring the integration of
Asian American and Pacific Islander studies.
