4. *PRIORITY DISCUSSION / ACTION ITEMS
4.1. WJELA
WI Literacy Coach T.Smith and WJ Assistant Principal Ewings joined the meeting to
highlight recent changes, particularly in the development of the WJ ELA curriculum. T.Smith reviewed
each ELA unit for grades 6-8, outlining the learning goals and the texts used. All texts have already
been approved. A new grammar program has been piloted with the goal of helping students
consistently transfer grammar skills into other subjects such as science and math. Students are
increasingly discussing grammar concepts and are able to apply them when prompted, though they
are not yet doing so automatically. This initiative is part of a two-year goal. After the first year, the
results have been very positive. The curriculum.design focuses on skill development in grades 6 and 7,
while grade 8 transitions to a thematic approach to better prepare students for high school.
It was noted that this is the last Curriculum Committee meeting for the 2024-2025 school year,
and meetings will begin again in Fall of 2025.
